The University of Miami Tissue Bank acquired new facilities for the recovery of tissues, allowing more donations to be accepted while also increasing service to the community.
In an effort to improve quality of life and make transplants readily available to patients, the University of Miami Tissue Bank, now Legacy Donor Services Foundation, has continued to serve the community, while also assisting in the organization of additional tissue banks throughout the United States and abroad.
In 2014, in order to expand services to donors and donor families, the University of Miami Tissue Bank became UMTB Donor Services Foundation, prior to becoming Legacy Donor Services Foundation. This transition allowed the tissue program the opportunity to further serve the community as stewards of donation.

Senior Manager, Donor Partner RelationsAdam Stewart began his journey in the tissue industry in 2007 as a Tissue Recovery Technician, laying a strong foundation in this vital field. In 2015, he joined Legacy Donor Services in the Jacksonville office, where he further honed his expertise.
In 2018, Adam transitioned to Exsurco, a medical device company, where he trained burn surgeons in excision and grafting techniques using advanced equipment. This experience enriched his knowledge, allowing him to return to Legacy Donor Services as a trainer for the newly launched donor partner program.
Initially, the program focused on musculoskeletal tissues with just one partner. Recognizing the growth potential, Adam targeted musculoskeletal, spine, and birth tissues to expand the initiative. As the Senior Manager of Donor Partner Relations, he now oversees a program that has grown significantly under his leadership, enhancing Legacy’s ability to provide donation opportunities for more families and to meet the increasing need for safe, quality grafts for patients in need.
Adam is dedicated to advancing the mission of Legacy Donor Services and is committed to making a meaningful impact in the lives of donor families and recipients alike.
Director, Donor Services Center
Shawn Duncan is the Director of Donor Services at Legacy Donor Services Foundation. With over 20 years of experience in the tissue and organ donation and transplant community, Shawn has worked in various roles within the industry, including organ procurement organizations and tissue processors. In addition, he has over 17 years of military experience in the medical field and was honorably discharged. Shawn holds a bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration from Park University and is certified as a tissue bank specialist by the American Association of Tissue Banks.
Senior Director, Professional Development and Communications
With over 30 years of experience in the field of tissue donation and transplantation, Patricia Darrigan has made significant contributions to the Legacy Donor Services Foundation since its inception. Currently serving as the Senior Director of Professional Development and Communications, Patricia has held various leadership roles since October 2009, focusing on enhancing donor services and communications across Florida. Her extensive background includes managing educational initiatives for over 175 hospitals and fostering relationships with key stakeholders, including medical examiners and organ procurement organizations, to ensure the integrity of tissue recovery processes.
Throughout her career, Patricia has been instrumental in developing strategic communication plans and community outreach programs that promote tissue donation. From November 2019 to present, she spearheads initiatives that engage local and national partners, facilitated donor education programs, and manages the Donor Family Bereavement program. Her commitment to enhancing community awareness and building impactful relationships has helped increase donor participation and foster a culture of donation across the region.
Patricia’s prior roles include Director of Donor Services and Communications, where she oversaw all areas related to donor services, including family support, call center operations, and community education. She has successfully implemented business plans aimed at increasing donation opportunities while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. Her leadership in community awareness campaigns has significantly improved donor registration and education, particularly among diverse populations in South Florida.
In addition to her leadership at Legacy, Patricia is actively involved in various professional organizations, including the Association for Advancing Tissue and Biologics, Donor Heroes and Donate Life Florida, where she has held multiple leadership roles. She has received numerous awards for her dedication to tissue donation, including the Donate Life Florida Outstanding Leadership and Service Award. Patricia’s commitment to her field and her community continues to drive her efforts to advance the mission of Legacy Donor Services Foundation.
